Residence

MORE THAN JUST A FESTIVAL, A RESIDENT COMPOSER FOR THE GUITAR IN THE ALPS !

The Festival is the highlight of a much vaster event which runs from September to May during which period dozens of cultural and artistic events have taken place in Grand Lac and Grand Chambéry. Throughout the year, numerous socio-cultural structures have participated in this programme dedicated to a special encounter with the classical guitar and the diverse musical spheres it comes into contact with.

Intergenerational, no barriers, young talents, creativity and an international dimension are the focal points of “Guitare en Alpes !”

Resident composer

Within the framework of the first edition of this festival, the composer and multi-instrumentalist Mathias Duplessy is in residence. He has recreated two works for several guitars, originally ordered and created in 2018 at the Festival Drôme de Guitare with the pupils of the second and third cycle of classes in Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains et Bassens, “Par Tous les Chemins” and “Hommage à Ennio Morricone” (Part 1 & 2).

In February Mathias Duplessy directed a training course for the preparation of these young talents for stage appearances. He also ran several workshops on the theme of Flamenco and during the year addressed Spanish classes in the Lycée Marlioz at Aix-les-Bains. Saturday, May 4th at Chambéry we shall have the pleasure of seeing Mathias Duplessy with the trio Cavalcade for which he has composed all the music !!

Mathias Duplessy

Mathias Duplessy has always professed a great love of the cinema. His style is very melodious, a mixture of ethnic instruments, acoustic guitars, chords, flutes and vocals. He has already composed the music for a dozen feature-length films and regularly works in Mumbai for contemporary Indian cinema as well as in France and Morocco.

An unconditional lover of Ravel, Stravinski, Gismonti, he regularly composes pieces either for the guitar or chamber music which are played by concert performers such as Jérémy Jouve.

He produces, directs, arranges and composes or just records for artists such as Sophia Charaï, Les Mouettes, Dikes, Bevinda, Ameth Male, Enzo Enzo, Nicola Tescari, Shakara, Shankar Mahadevane, Ranjit Barot, Armand Amar, Sylvia Malagugini, Nadéah, Mukhtiyr Ali, Debout sur le Zinc, Lili, Bussy…

At the age of 18 he is already a well-known figure on the music scene and acts as accompanying guitarist for international and French “world music” artists such as Sophia Charaî, Bevinda, Monica Passos, Nico Morelli, Dikes, Omar Pene.

He now devotes most of his time to more personal projects such as the Cavalcade Trio or “Les violons du monde”.

Savoie Specialist Hospital Centre

The Specialist Hospital Centre of Savoie is a public health establishment serving the 420 000-strong Savoie population. Its mission is to offer mental health care such as general psychiatric treatment for adults, pediatric and juvenile psychiatry, treatment of psychopathology in adolescents.

Psychiatry, more than any other medical discipline, needs to treat the overall needs of the patient. In order to address this particular aspect, the hospital centre has a cultural project that is completely incorporated into the establishment’s main aims under the “Health and Culture” dispositive.

Talent-building plateforms offered by the Hospital Centre

These come under the form of concerts outside the hospital which are dedicated to young talent: guitar ensembles from the various music conservatories in Savoie or young talent from the larger regional conservatories such as Grenoble, Geneva, Aoste…

These concerts take place at the Savoie hospital of Bassens and inaugurate the partnership between the Festival and this atypical medical structure which is part of the National Culture and Health programme.

Patients and their families are encouraged to come to these concerts which are open to the public !

Au lycée Marlioz - A year dedicated to the guitar !

Instigated by Ghislaine Béolet who teaches Spanish at an Aix-les-Bains school – the Lycée Jean Marlioz – the year’s curriculum of the school’s Spanish classes has included the programme “The place of the guitar in Hispanic culture”.

Through music in general but particularly the guitar, nearly 300 pupils have studied the Hispanic culture, the Spain of three religions, Flamenco, Andalusia, Spanish film music, the gypsy people and have discussed racism and inequality as well as meeting music producers and artists from the Festival, etc.

Programme

Friday, May 3rd – Conservatoire d’Aix-les-Bains

A rendering in music covering the year’s programme and encounters with professional musicians

A special thanks to Ghislaine Béolet!

Intergenerational transmission

Throughout the year, pupils from the Music Conservatories of Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry have gone to meet members of the older generation in retirement and care homes. These opportunities enable the young students to get used to performing in public and offer the residents moments of pleasure and enjoyment ! During the Festival, residents who have benefited from this programme are invited to attend the various concerts.
